Melbourne's historic Pentridge Prison site has undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis, transforming into a one-billion-dollar dining and entertainment precinct. For the developers, this project was a passion project, so when they invited Aloha Pools to be part of it, we eagerly embraced the opportunity. With only a few prison hotel conversions worldwide, the client had distinct expectations for this venture. A key highlight of this stunning development is the exclusive underground sanctuary pool, catering to premier guests of "The Interlude." In this blog post, we'll explore the challenges faced during the transformation process and the remarkable outcome that has become a destination unlike any other.

Preserving History, Embracing Modernity: Building a contemporary hotel on the grounds of a 170-year-old heritage site came with unique challenges. The construction of the modern Adina tower took nearly two years, during which builders meticulously monitored Pentridge's renowned bluestone walls to ensure they remained untouched while the three-level basement was constructed. Preserving the historical integrity of the site while creating a modern lifestyle precinct was a delicate balance that required skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Given the age of the heritage prison, the utmost care was taken to safeguard the well-being of all workers involved in the project. Before setting foot on the site, construction workers underwent blood tests to determine lead levels. Follow-up tests were conducted at regular intervals, A safe working environment & a commitment to safety never wavered. Transforming the prison cells into an underground pool sanctuary required innovative solutions. The plant room, a converted area from two old prison cells, presented challenges in core drilling through the robust bluestone and concrete. Moreover, accessibility for disabled individuals was a priority, and the design and construction incorporated facilities such as the pelican hoist, making the underground pool area inclusive for all guests.

The crowning jewel of the entire development is the exclusive underground sanctuary pool. Boasting clean, sharp lines and adorned with Midnight Blue Mix tiles, the Aloha pool exudes sophistication. This juxtaposition of modern design with the age-old bluestone walls creates a breathtaking visual contrast, fulfilling the client's vision for this historic site.
Dubbed "The Interlude," the hotel provides guests with an experience-led urban retreat. Premier visitors can immerse themselves in the historic ambiance of the site while enjoying top-notch amenities and services. The blending of history and modernity creates a one-of-a-kind experience that guests will cherish forever.
